IMPORTANT :
Guidance Information for application and T-cens registration are now available on the website of the Department of Civil Engineering.

Please see below of this page from #02 INTERNATIONAL GRADUATE PROGRAM.

The Department of Civil Engineering boasts one of the most advanced and progressive global academic environments at the University of Tokyo, and is specifically designed to actively recruit overseas students with international educational backgrounds. In order to reach the global talent pool, the Department of Civil Engineering has established a specific entrance exam procedure, which is compatible with the standard entrance exam, to eliminate the need for applicants to travel to Tokyo to take a standard entrance exam. However, international applicants applying from within Japan must still follow the University of Tokyo's standard application process.

Prospective students who wish to study at the Department of Civil Engineering must obtain a full-scholarship in order to become a student of a degree program. The “self-financed student” mentioned on other sites therefore refers to an applicant who has secured funding through a full-scholarship by him/herself, and does not refer to a study period funded through the personal funds, savings, or income of an applicant or an applicant’s family.

Entrance Exam – Regular Admission

Those who are already living or staying in Japan are required to take an entrance examination. For further information on the entrance examination, visit the School of Engineering website:
http://www.t.u-tokyo.ac.jp/etpage/international_applicants/general.html
or send an e-mail to gs@civil.t.u-tokyo.ac.jp

Tuition Fee
In the Department of Civil Engineering, all students are required to be full-time degree students from the time of their enrolment until the completion of their degree program. Accordingly, the full rate of tuition will be charged to all students. Please refer to the University of Tokyo website to see the tuition rates and fees.
http://www.u-tokyo.ac.jp/en/prospective-students/tuition_fees.html
Maintenance and living expenses
Along with the University fees mentioned at the link above, a prospective student must consider the living expenses to be incurred while living in Tokyo. This includes expenses such as insurance (medical, housing, accident), housing and rent, food, clothing, expenses related to study (books, copies, stationaries, etc.), commuting and transportation fees, air fare costs for arriving in Japan and returning to ones’ home country, and so on. Obviously, if family members must also be supported during your stay in Tokyo, these costs will rise.
Due to the relatively high living costs of Tokyo, the Department of Civil Engineering estimates that a standard monthly budget for a student in a degree program should be at least 150,000 Japanese Yen (or more). Therefore, the ideal amount of total resources (i.e., educational fees and living expenses) that a single student must cover, at a minimum, across the number of years required to complete a degree program are as follows:

Accordingly, a “Full-Scholarship” should cover:

  • - Full tuition fee
  • - Admission fee
  • - Examination fee
  • - A monthly subsistence and housing allowance
  • - A round-trip air ticket
  • - Medical insurance
