INTERNATIONAL GRADUATE PROGRAM

The Department of Civil Engineering at the University of Tokyo boasts one of the most advanced and progressive global academic environments in the world, and has admission systems to recruit talented students internationally. In order to reach the global talent pool, the Department of Civil Engineering recruits students through both international admission and regular admission. International students living outside Japan can apply for international admission where applicants do not need to travel to Tokyo to take entrance exams. These international students can alternatively choose to take entrance exams for regular admission. On the other hand, international students already in Japan can apply only for regular admission and must take the university’s entrance exams.

Prospective students who wish to obtain international admission and study at the Department of Civil Engineering must obtain a full-scholarship as shown in the figure below, which also provides details of the three categories of scholarship available:

Entrance Exam – Regular Admission

FINANCIAL INFORMATION

Tuition Fee

In the Department of Civil Engineering, all students are required to be full-time degree students from the time of their enrolment until the completion of their degree program. Accordingly, the full rate of tuition will be charged to all students. Please refer to the University of Tokyo website to see the tuition rates and fees.
http://www.u-tokyo.ac.jp/en/prospective-students/tuition_fees.html

Maintenance and living expenses

Along with the University fees mentioned at the link above, a prospective student must consider the living expenses to be incurred while living in Tokyo. This includes expenses such as insurance (medical, housing, accident), housing and rent, food, clothing, expenses related to study (books, copies, stationaries, etc.), commuting and transportation fees, air fare costs for arriving in Japan and returning to ones’ home country, and so on. Obviously, if family members must also be supported during your stay in Tokyo, these costs will rise.
Due to the relatively high living costs of Tokyo, the Department of Civil Engineering estimates that a standard monthly budget for a student in a degree program should be at least 150,000 Japanese Yen (or more). Therefore, the ideal amount of total resources (i.e., educational fees and living expenses) that a single student must cover, at a minimum, across the number of years required to complete a degree program are as follows:

Doctoral Course
Master's Course

Accordingly, a “Full-Scholarship” should cover:

  • - Full tuition fee
  • - Admission fee
  • - Examination fee
  • - A monthly subsistence and housing allowance
  • - A round-trip air ticket
  • - Medical insurance
